Core and elective units: what students should check
Understand how units build a qualification and why the final elective selection matters to your goals.
What core units mean
Core units are mandatory parts of the qualification. They cover skills every student must demonstrate to meet the national training package requirements for that qualification.
How electives shape your study
Electives provide room for an industry focus or a particular job outcome within the qualification packaging rules. The number and permitted choice of electives differ by course. The units displayed on a course page should be checked against MPC’s current training plan before you enrol.
Questions to ask
Ask which elective units are included in your intake, whether any units have prerequisites, how practical skills are assessed, and whether a specialisation will appear on your final qualification. These answers help you compare courses on more than title and duration.
